I happened upon Cat Ownership 101: Secrets of Buying & Raising Cats the other day and was intrigued, so I took the plunge and ordered it. It turned out to be a pretty good buy, and of course at $9.99 wasn't much risk. It is an easy reading but comprehensive examination of what you need to know about buying and raising a cat. Many people make critical mistakes when selecting a cat as companion and turn out disappointed when it doesn't work out. A little research beforehand goes quite a long way to paving that onward road with happiness instead of sadness.
The book starts off with a survey of some of the popular cat breeds. Do you want a high energy cat that will play all day? Do you want an affectionate cat that will cuddle? Do you want a quiet cat or a talker? Following on is a discussion of the pros and cons of male, female, neuter or no, long hair or short, pure bred or mixed, and the important question of buying a kitten vs buying cat. This summary will get you on the road to selecting the breed of cat that's right for you.
From there we move on into some practical tips on cat-proofing your home, helping your cat or kitten adjust to your home and family, breaking them into the swing of things slowly and consistently. Cats can get stressed out with change and newness, so rushing them along into unfamiliar situations can have bad consequences for the adjustment period. You will learn all about what supplies you will need to take care of your new feline friend and the items you should purchase to make sure everything is ready.
Another interesting and informative topic is the feeding and exercising. From not underfeeding that energetic kitten to a proper diet for the adult cat and ways to keep them active, you have tons of great tips listed. We segue into cat health care concerns there, where you will learn about the common illnesses that your cats can suffer from, all about vet visits, shots, neutering and spaying, grooming considerations and what to do to keep them happy and healthy.
Another key piece of the book involves common cat behaviors. What does a cat's body language tell you about it's mood? Ear and tail cues along with vocal patterns can help you communicate with your cats, and until they learn human language it's going to be your lingua franca of choice. Why do they knead us? What does clawing mean? From here you will learn how to help mold the behavior of your cat and help prevent them from unsafe acts.
Finally, the book closes with a list of cat oriented organizations that you might need and a useful glossary of cat related terms and acronyms that refer to felines and specific meanings you will need to understand. All in all, I was quite impressed with the book and found it extremely informative. I wholeheartedly reccomend this handy and useful book, and it's definitely a steal at only $9.99!
