Clomipramine

Is your dog or cat nervous or anxious? Clomipramine can help. Clomipramine for dogs is well known, but there are usages of Clomipramine for cats too, while FDA approval is currently only for people and dogs. It's surprising, and possibly a little funny, to encounter a medication that helps both people and pets, but that’s the way it goes. I wonder what that says about us sometimes.

What Is Clomipramine?

Clomipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant. It is a medication approved by the FDA to treat veterinary problems. Your veterinarian will have to prescribe it for your pet, as you can not buy it over the counter. Clomipramine acts on chemicals in brains that can get out of whack, causing behavioral issues. Clomipramine is a Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitor, or for the layman, keeps higher levels of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is associated with feelings of comfort. Clomipramine for dogs is used to ameliorate separation anxiety problems. Clomipramine also combats aggression and obsessive-compulsive disorders and behavioral problems like continually chasing their own tails. Clomipramine for cats treats stress and anxiety related behavioral concerns like over grooming or spraying.

What Does Clomipramine Treat?

Clomipramine - Dogs:

Clomipramine for dogs is primarily used to reducing the symptoms of separation anxiety disorder. Since dogs are pack animals, they are very social-based creatures, needing a high amount of interaction with the rest of the pack. Especially in homes in which the whole family works or attends school and are gone most of the time, dogs will get rather anxious and lonely with no company from their pack. Canine separation anxiety disorder usually manifests itself initially through barking, salivating, and hyperventilating and worsens to stages of inappropriate defecation and urination, destroying possessions and household furniture, and trying to find ways to escape and rejoin the pack, which may result in digging under fences, running away, etc. Uncontrolled separation anxiety problems constitute one of the major reasons dogs end up euthanized outside of actual disease.

Behavior modification can reduce these effects, but training is time intensive and does not provide immediate results, and both the people and the animals need to take part in it. Sedatives tend to be poor options due to long-term negative side effects. They can also have the effect of dulling the animal’s personality as well.

Clomipramine canine relaxes without sedation, though initially there can be a minor sedative effect over several days while the dog gets used to the medication. It's important to note that this will not completely eliminate the symptoms, but merely helps keep them under better control. Reassuring the dog that the pack will return and behavioral modification training is also highly important. Since they are social animals, dogs simply need their companionship, so it is of benefit to use Clomipramine. Dog behaviors are not always in line with the needs of today’s family structure and time demands, so we should help them when and however we can.

Clomipramine - Cats:

The issues and symptoms you might use Clomipramine for cats on also revolve around anxiety issues. Though felines are noticeably less likely to have separation problems, they can still become anxious over other concerns, for example fear of other aggressive cats, trip taking, be it a short jaunt to the vet or a long cross country move, or obsessive-compulsive grooming disorders.

Obsessive-compulsive grooming disorders, or psychogenic alopecia, is a condition where hair loss results from compulsive grooming. A veterinarian needs to rule out other potential causes prior to diagnosing the cat with psychogenic alopecia, like allergies, mange, ringworm, or any other possible illnesses. Once psychogenic alopecia has been determined, the evidence points to treatment with Clomipramine. Cats respond well to the medication, but if any of the different diagnoses is the actual problem, then it would only complicate matter by hiding the real problem.

What Clomipramine Side Effects Should I Be Aware Of?

Clomipramine occasionally results in drowsiness or vertigo, minor dehydration, constipation, fatigue or appetite loss. Ensure your animals drink extra water and you should also monitor their condition so as to spot any complications more quickly. If any further Clomipramine side effect becomes a problem, immediately check with your vet for their guidance, in case of some kind of reaction. Don’t forget, no matter how much we think we can talk to our pets, they can not explain what's happening to them so it is in your best interest to observe them carefully.

What Clomipramine Dosage Is Appropriate?

Clomipramine anxiety relief is available in Clomipramine 25mg, Clomipramine 50mg, and Clomipramine 75mg capsules and Clomipramine 20mg, Clomipramine 40mg, and Clomipramine 80mg tablets. The ordinary expected Clomipramine dose for dogs is ½ to 2 mg per pound. Cats can be somewhat sensitive to tricyclic antidepressants, so the dose is less by body mass, usually 1mg to 5mg per day. Symptoms may not stop or reduce immediately, so be aware it may take some days to appreciate the effect. If a dose is late, go ahead and give it, but please do not ever administer a double dose. Symptoms of an overdose could include seizures, confusion, hallucinations, fatigue and fainting. Clomipramine withdrawal can be difficult for animals so you should make sure the Clomipramine withdrawal is done gradually. If you encounter any of these symptoms, contact your vet immediately
