Does your dog or cat exhibit extreme anxiety? Clomicalm may help. Clomicalm for dogs is well known, but you can also use Clomicalm for cats as well, though it is currently only FDA approved for humans and dogs. It's interesting, and maybe a little amusing, to find a drug that works for humans and animals, but there it is.
What Is Clomicalm?
Clomicalm is what's known as a tricyclic antidepressant. It is a prescription medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treatment of veterinary problems and is not available without a prescription. Clomicalm acts on chemicals in people's and dogs or cats brains that can get out of balance leading to behavioral problems. Clomicalm is a Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitor, or in English, it inhibits serotonin from leaving the brain. Serotonin is a chemical that is associated with feelings of comfort. Clomicalm for dogs is intended to be used to relieve separation anxiety problems. Clomicalm can also be used to combat both aggression and obsessive-compulsive disorders and behavioral problems such as tail chasing. Clomicalm for cats is also used to treat stress and anxiety related behavioral problems.
What Does Clomicalm Treat?

The problems you would want to use Clomicalm for dogs on would primarily be separation anxiety issues. As pack animals, dogs are very social and require a large degree of interpersonal interaction. Particularly among households where everyone works or goes to school and are gone large parts of the day, dogs can get very anxious and lonely being by themselves all day. Canine separation anxiety disorder can manifest itself at first through barking, salivating, and hyperventilating and move on into stages of inappropriate defecation and urination, destructive behavior towards furniture and possessions, and trying to escape to find and rejoin the pack. Uncontrolled separation anxiety issues are one of the major contributors to dogs being euthanized.
Behavior modification might help, but training takes time, and work needs to be done both by the animals and the owners. Sedatives were not good options because of long-term negative side effects and dulling the animal's personality.
Clomicalm works by relaxing the dog without sedation, though in the initial stages there may be a slight sedative effect for a few days as the dog adjusts to the chemicals. It's important to note that this will not make the symptoms go away, but simply helps control them. Reassuring the pet that the owner will return and working on behavior modification techniques are also necessary. As social animals, dogs simply don't take well to being left alone, so it helps to use the Clomicalm. Dog behaviors are not always best adapted to today's post-nuclear family.
Clomicalm - Cats:
The problems you would want to use Clomicalm for cats on are also anxiety related. While cats are significantly less prone to separation issues, they can still anxious for other reasons, such as fear of other aggressive cats, taking trips either to the vet or other longer trips, or obsessive-compulsive grooming disorders.
Obsessive-compulsive grooming behaviors, or psychogenic alopecia, results in hair loss caused by compulsive grooming. Your vet must rule out other potential factors prior to determining if the cat has psychogenic alopecia, such as allergies, mange, ringworm, or other illnesses. Once these are ruled out, the evidence points to using Clomicalm. Cats can then respond to the treatment, but if one of the other possibilities is the actual problem, then it wouldn't have helped and masked further issues.
What Clomicalm Side Effects Exist?
Clomicalm can cause drowsiness or vertigo, slight dehydration, constipation, weakness or loss of appetite. Make sure your pets get lots of water and you monitor their condition. If any other Clomicalm side effect occur, consult with you veterinarian immediately for their advice on what to do. Remember, your pets can not physically tell you what's going on so you will need to watch them closely.
What Clomicalm Dosage Should I Use?
Clomicalm comes in Clomicalm 25mg, Clomicalm 50mg, and Clomicalm 75mg capsules and Clomicalm 20mg, Clomicalm 40mg, and Clomicalm 80mg tablets. Typical doses for dogs are ½ to 2 mg per pound. Cats are more sensitive to tricyclic antidepressants, so the dose is typically on 1mg to 5mg a day. Symptoms may not be immediately lessened, so don't worry if it takes a few days to notice an effect. If you're not too late with a dose, go ahead and give it, but don't double dose under any circumstance. Symptoms of an overdose could include seizures, confusion, hallucinations, fatigue and fainting. If you encounter any of these symptoms, contact your vet immediately.
