Is Feliway Safe For Birds?
Filed Under Feliway, Spotted Elsewhere |

I saw this question asked lately over in a bird forum:
Has anyone used the Feliway diffuser (plug-in) around their birds? We have two cats and are going to be fostering a cat in a couple weeks. To make the transition a little smoother, I wanted to try Feliway, but I want to make sure that it won't harm my budgies. I'm getting conflicting reports about it.
You definitely want to be careful about how you use Feliway. Several users chimed in, concerned at the potential consequences, but then a couple of cooler heads prevailed with the knowledge that they'd used it around birds before with no problems. It is important, of course, to make sure that you don't use the Feliway spray directly on a cat, but it isn't going to do much for birds or dogs. They have different body chemistries and senses, so they won't be affected the same way. Feliway is quite often used in veterinary offices to promote a sense of calm for the feline friends that have come to visit, so I'd say that's pretty good faith evidence that it shouldn't be problematical to other animals provided it is not misused in any fashion.
